New Albert film called The Best Years!!
From Derry Today: The women of Derry are in for a real treat next month when not one but three Hollywood hunks arrive in the city to start filming the latest movie from local writer and director Danny Patrick.

Dean Cain, star of the popular 90s TV series 'Lois and Clarke: The New Adventures of Superman', football hardman Vinnie Jones who starred in 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrells' and Billy Boyd, star of 'The Lord of the Rings' are to take three of the leading roles in 'The Best Years'.

Movie legend Albert Finney ('Erin Brockovich') is also expected to come on board and will arrive in Derry along with the rest of the cast and crew early next month as the movie goes into pre-production.

Speaking exclusively to the 'Derry Journal' this week, Danny said he was very excited about his latest project adding that he was fulfilling a lifetimes ambition to make a film set in his hometown.

"I've wanted to do a film that wasn't about the troubles and that showed up all the characters from Derry and the warmth of the people here. I'm hoping 'The Best Years' will do that. "The film is going to be set centrally in Derry. I wrote it with locations I know in mind and we are hoping to film in places such as the Metro Bar, the Collon Bar and the Brandywell."

Danny has already received great critical acclaim with his films 'Malicious Intent', 'Hey Mr. DJ' and 'Moussaka and Chips'. Of course, securing such an established and well known cast will not do Danny or his film any harm.

"We are delighted with the cast we have secured," Danny said. "As a film maker of course I want people to see the film and give it a chance and having these big names on board will encourage that."

And, of course, there has been a great deal of excitement about the impending arrival of Superman Dean Cain to the North West.

"Dean is very excited to be coming to Derry. He has never been to Ireland before and can't wait to get over and see if the people really are friendly. "For some reason all the women I've spoken to about him seem very excited too. Seems like every woman of a certain age had his poster on their wall or picture on their pencil case!" Danny laughed.

Of course for Danny, the real excitement comes from bringing his vision to the big screen. 'The Best Years' tells the story of life in Northern Ireland after the Troubles.

The criminal empires that have existed during the troubles can no longer operate and are being shut down.

Three nationalist petty criminals George, Liam and Emmet (Billy Boyd), overhear an English gang plotting to rob a money laundry, owned by the resident crime boss Simon McKnight.

Our heroes decide to beat the English gang to it and rob the factory themselves. This is a step too far and they are forced to enlist the help of a gang from the other side of the community Dougie, Frank and Tommy. Neither trusts each other, but the prize is worth the risk. The English gang becomes the least of their worries as the factory owner Simon McKnight has a ruthless bodyguard Giggles (played by Vinnie Jones), who has a keen interest in the security of the factory.

While the big names will no doubt steal the show, local actors and actresses are also getting a look in. The role of George will be played by local man Jason Gerrard and, if you fancy getting in on the action yourself, Danny and Co. will be looking for extras to help film crowd scenes during the month of November.

"We will be recreating an Orange march and a riot scene. We have struck a deal with Donegal County Council to film those scenes in an industrial estate but we will steal need up to 600 people to make the scenes work."

Danny will be setting up a production office in the city in the next few weeks. Further details of filming and the quest for extras will be published in the 'Journal' as they emerge.

A Good Year review
From a review of A Good Year in the Sunday Mirror: The real laughs come from Tom Hollander as a witty estate agent pal of Max and it's always great to see Albert Finney in eccentric old-bloke mode. A great soundtrack helps to enhance the experience too.

Albert mention #1
From an article about actor James McAvoy: When working on the screenplay, (David) Nicholls held two films in mind. One was Billy Liar: 'James has some of the qualities of a Tom Courtenay or an Albert Finney: there's a down-to-earth quality to him ... he's not a great Olympian beauty, he's a bit of an everyman, he's one of us.'
